Ulster Apprentices Score in Skillbuild Final

Two local construction apprentices are celebrating great success at the UK Skillbuild National Finals that were held recently in Leeds.

apprenticesJames Dougan (21) from Northern Regional College, Antrim Campus, and Christopher Gillick (20) from South West College, Enniskillen campus both received silver and bronze medals respectively.

They were part of the Skillbuild Northern Ireland team who at this prestigious competition competed to be named Britain’s ‘Building Idol’ against the other regional winners from all over the UK in each of the construction craft disciplines.

All NI team members qualified for the UK National finals by competing and winning gold at the Skillbuild NI competition held earlier this year and for the finals each had to compete across 11 construction trades including – Bricklaying, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Plastering and Roof Slating and Tiling.

David Cooper Chairman of Skillbuild NI said: “The construction industry offers a varied and interesting career for young people. Skillbuild demonstrates the expertise that is involved and is an excellent opportunity for young people to compete against each other at the highest levels. By putting forward their most talented students, colleges can also show off their talent and enhance their reputation by demonstrating their construction training is top quality.”

In addition to this recent success, Martin Davey (19) from South Eastern Regional College, Lisburn campus won the Summit Skills Skillfridge Gold Medal at the UK final held in Birmingham in June to become national champion.

The medal winners in each of these competitions are given the opportunity to now compete against each other in a series of elite competitions for the opportunity to represent the UK in WorldSkills – the Skills Olympics - to be held next year in Calgary, Canada.
