Cross-border bridge design unveiled
The design of the proposed £16m cross-border bridge over the Clanrye River at the mouth of Carlingford Lough between Narrow Water Castle just outside Warrenpoint and Omeath in County Louth in Co Down, has been unveiled.
The Narrow Water Bridge will be a 280-metre long cable-stayed structure and will be designed so that it will also be safe for both pedestrians and cyclists to cross, as well as cars and coaches, though heavy goods vehicles will be discouraged.
The bridge will have a tower at each end, one at 100 metres tall, the other at 30 metres.
Louth County Council chairman Declan Breathnach commented: “This is not only a much needed addition to our road network, which will benefit tourism and trade in the locality. It will also become an icon of peace in our time –a symbol of cooperation and proof that both sides of the border are concentrating on the future.”
Consultant engineers, Roughan O’Donovan, says a section of the bridge will lift to let boats, tall ships and other water traffic pass by.
Hundreds of stakeholders, members of the public and interest groups on both sides of the border took part in public consultations earlier this year. Engineers produced three different bridge design options which were examined in relation to funding, environmental impact, ecological and landscape and heritage.
